Hi Christian. Today we are pleased to welcome actress and stand up comedian Caroline Rhea. Caroline was born and raised in Quebec, Canada and moved to New York City in 1986, where she found success as a stand up. That led to many filmed stand up experiences which prompted her to move to Los Angeles and pursue an acting career debuting in a short lived series for NBC. Carolyn gained widespread fame for her role as Aunt Hilda on the ABC and later the WB network television show Sabrina and the Teenage Witch, and for her recurring role on the latest incarnation of Hollywood Squares. She's also known for her role on the long running Disney show Phineas and Ferb and hosting her own talk show and the first season of The Biggest Loser. Many movies followed, including those for Lifetime and marvista and the Disney Channel, as well as the features mom's got a date with a vampire and the crank. Along with hosting and competing on various game shows. Carolyn's most recent work includes the Disney series, Sydney to the maps and hosting the GNC show, Carolyn and friends.

And last year during COVID we were staying here. Yes. My daughter is 12. And all of a sudden, like, no one's out on the streets. No one's anywhere. There's like a knock on the door. I see my daughter come downstairs. She's handed a milkshake. I know what happened. He got cheese. I ordered I go. There's a way for you to call someone and bring a milkshake right to the door. She's like, Yeah, I got my Can you show me how to do that, please.

I'm the luckiest and I really forewarn everyone poor Christian has heard this but the last few years because my dad's not in great health. I won't be okay when I lose them. There's a weird denial that happens because Cuz it's like our worst fear as kids, like, we don't want anything to ever happen to our parents if we're lucky enough to have parents that we really love. Yeah. And, and like, my mother was in hospice, and they're still at this, like God given bubble around you that you think, well, she's not going to die. Like, you know what I mean? Yeah. And then when they you Yeah, it's a shifted reality. And thank God, I have a child, my father died. And the next month, I got pregnant at age 43. Naturally, so like, She's like, miracle, baby. God.

It was given by my mother. And she said, Don't ever compare yourself to anyone else wise, like in your life, that they're like, how's that working? trans their part? Not your part, Santa. It's all fine. What about you? What's yours?

Well, well, very similar. But I do have to say, Well, I love that piece of advice. Unfortunately, I'm a very late learner. And it's really taken me a good five decades to really believe it and not listen to what other people are saying about me or take things personally or all that but my best piece of advice was from Norman Lear. And he said, This is what you do, and you do what well, but it's not who you are. Oh, I love that. It has helped me again with very similar issues when I don't get apart or when it's not for me. The other thing is cloris. Leachman said to me, audition, not audition a meeting the answers in the envelope, you have nothing to do about it, let it go. And I always say that when I go into an audition or have a meeting, or I want a job really bad. It's like the answers in the envelope. You just give it away. It's not up to you. So those two things have helped me.

Norman Lear made me want to be an actress because I grew up on all of his shows. And that's all I wanted to be. And I mean, Bea Arthur influenced who I wanted to be as an actress, all of those women. You know, I have to do a series with Rue McClanahan every day. I was like, it was a hilarious show in which she was having an affair with my husband. Because what a critical premise. It's called sorted live. Her daughter was my best friend it Dale shores wrote it if he would love you, you know, Dell.

So one of my bad habits is that when someone texts me the whole texting, we need to go to graduate school and emojis and all this. And that. Yeah, my response is to write them back and say something funny year. So I've got to do that. I am a horrible procrastinator. I'm just now finishing my senior high school math homework. Now. My first instinct is not amazing kindness. I wish to be kinder. My parents are just innately good. I have to really think hard. You know what, you're a Taurus with Gemini influence. Yes. No one I Honestly also is and I learned this very late in life. I'm an introvert, and everyone approaches me like I'm an extrovert. And it that's so interesting. It's jarring to me and it's, it makes me nervous. And so I really I need and require a lot of time alone by myself. That's how I got you've an eight. Because I worried so much. And I love to travel. Right. And so I it's been very challenging for me because I do want that feeling of if I get a job if we go on a trip, I want to just be able to go and I personally can't with a dog. I know normal people can. But Mindy cannot. I mean, I'm just not that kind of owner. So I it's been hard for me to think about getting another yeah thing that I am solely responsible for because I live. I live alone so it shows me.

I wish that my daughter stayed with me seven days a week and someone took the dog on every other weekend and Wednesdays Yeah, my dog was sitting on my lap. She was very sick. She arrived with Parvo she almost died. She was in the hospital for 17 days, then I had to feed her by hand for six weeks. I really was like, Is there anything I just breastfeed her because it'd be so much easier, honest to God. And at one point, she is sitting in my lap, and I've got like, you know, she viciously beat me on you any idea how painful it is to realize your knee is accessible from your lap? That's amazing. Here's my issue. Because I've been asked a couple of times in my life to do that. I say the same thing. I'm an actor. For real. I'd like being different people. I am. All of my insecurities are as Mindy as a person, not as a professional. That's why this is the career for me. I handle rejection. Well, I handle all the things well in regard to career, but personally, everything's off the table. I'm highly sensitive. I take everything personally. Yeah. So so you feel everything. So this sense of going up or getting up. And I have to put it in the mind of like the character of Monday. It makes me hurt. You know, I constantly have felt and I'm sure you have felt this because we are very similar in our career paths is that I chronically feel misunderstood, because everyone wants me to be Natalie, and I love her. There's not one bad thing about being recognized for her. But what's frustrating as an actress is I there's so much more that I want to do. And so how I lead with that is I'm excited. There's so much more detail, right? So I don't get discouraged by that. But there's something about going up on stage or going up and being Mindy. That is the last thing I want you to do.

you. They come out of the mouth of like, we are iconic characters to children. Right? And now they're grown up and I still get them reduced to like, oh my god. I'm like, and they're like, be your authentic self. I'm like, Well, I feel this in a store right now. Okay. I was she gonna make a purchase? It's Caroline rando. You know, I mean, like, I need some ingredients for a spell. Yeah, I think you have to do I think that the other problem that you have is that all of your planets are in your head. So when you don't have fire out front, yeah, like, you don't lead with that. So I am Aries fully impulsive, so I don't want to they say all these things. Yes. And then my Taurus moon yells at me for having done it. And my Aquarius goes, Well, that was really stupid. But I've still got the fire to get up there and do it. But you're gonna stop yourself from doing it if you make it such a cerebral decision. Yeah, always. And Pisces, you know, yeah, that's a hard combo platter. But I would say you gotta let go of like, every time one of those things comes up. You just like go Okay, that's nice. And now I'm booking the theater. Okay, that's nice. Oh, I made it to doing five nights. Okay. Um, maybe you should start in Provincetown, where the game man will love and support you. Yeah, exactly. Yes. And, and you can do it there. I would just think like, what are your favorite stories to tell about all of it? Yes. I mean, even your Norman Lear. And and by the way, we're all freaking just neurotic as hell, right? I mean, everybody's not. There's not one person who's gonna come to your show and go, I was expecting a less flawed human. I really. I really thought I'd meet the perfect human who had no problems whatsoever. But yes.

I don't do well in LA when I'm not working. So I'm trying not to be freaked out. Yeah. But again, that's just like the old trick of the head. I'm going to Canada to do a show on Sunday. I'm doing like seven or eight episodes or something. And then I've been auditioning to play a nun. And let me tell you, no one's Grace is made less for this, then mine. Okay. Wimpole devoted to happiness. So I audition. You know, this is a real thing I have about actors and casting directors to that I worked in a theater, and people would call back for feedback. And I always thought it was so disrespectful to not give them closure. Like I'm sorry, please ask someone else. But I hated telling them so much. So I would just say we're not doing that production. Um, yeah, I was like, I'm so sorry. Yeah. Or, yeah, Shakespeare rewrote it, and we're back characters gone. I am going to do I really want to travel. Yes, I'm booked to go to Scotland. I'm trying to have more like, have it come up. But the tourists in both of us wants to know where the money is, and where the schedule is and where the security is always always. So you know, there's like money gigs. And then there's you got to do gigs. And then there's creative gigs. And I would like to do some really great okay.
